Desquamative gingivitis is a common condition with clinical manifestations such as a reddish, painful, swollen and lacerated gingiva, which may be the sign of some pathological changes in mucocutaneous tissues, including lichen planus or vesiculobullous diseases. It is very important to distinguish this condition from plaque-induced gingivitis, which is a very common problem solved in dental offices and can exacerbate the histopathological picture of the primary disease, leading to misdiagnosis and incorrect therapy. The text comprises knowledge of desquamative gingivitis, its symptoms, possible aetiological factors, diagnosis and therapy.

Keywords: desquamative gingivitis, lichen planus, pemphigus, pemphigoid, hypersensitivity, linear IgA disease
