Hereditary gingival fibromatosis may occur randomly or as a part of various syndromes. It can be transmitted as an autosomal, dominant, or recessive illness. It is a state, in which the gingiva is enlarged. Hereditary gingival fibromatosis can affect only certain parts of the maxilla and mandible, or it can be located throughout the whole arch of the maxilla and mandible. Consequently, it causes difficulties with eating and articulation; mouth breathing is also common. Treatment is predominantly surgical; however, cooperation with specialists is necessary due to the possible presence of other syndromes. Regular follow-up examinations of these patients are equally important.
