Herpes zoster (shingles) is an acute infectious disease caused by the reactivation of a latent virus persisting in sensory nerve ganglia. The infection is usually manifested by a typical clinical picture with unilateral herpetiform vesicles in the corresponding dermatome and is accompanied by pain. In the oral cavity, the palate and tongue are most often affected. The trigger for the reactivation of a latent infection is most often the weakening of the organism associated with immunosuppression. The most common complication of shingles is persistent pain that even lasts several months after the acute stage has passed. The treatment is aimed not only at the acute infectious disease itself, but also at the minimisation and prevention of postherpetic neuralgia.
