Periodontal pathogens, which together with other factors influence the development of periodontal diseases, are currently attributed a significant share in the development of systemic diseases. These diseases include, for example: Diabetes mellitus, respiratory diseases, oral and colorectal cancer, Alzheimer's disease and, last but not least, adverse pregnancy outcomes. In this review article, the authors focus mainly on the effect of periodontal bacteria on pregnancy. The most common complications are: premature birth, low birth weight, pre-eclampsia and/or miscarriage
Keywords: periodontal disease, premature birth, low birth weight, pre-eclampsia
