Canine tooth retention is a clinical diagnosis that often requires interdisciplinary work. Despite the correct diagnosis, localisation, correctly selected surgical intervention and treatment procedure, it can affect the final aesthetic result. The presented work examines the influence of canine tooth retention, its position and angulation to the midline between central maxillary incisors on the final aesthetic result of the orthodontic treatment. Methods: The sample includes 40 patients treated at the Dentaderm clinic with a primary diagnosis of canine tooth retention. The patient sample included 31 women and 9 men aged 10 to 39. 35 patients had retained...

Introduction and aim of the work: Precancerous conditions of mucous membranes of oral cavity present a significant problem in early diagnosis and treatment within oral medicine. The study was to examine a larger set of randomly selected patients and determine the occurrence of forms of precancerous conditions. Material and methodology: The authors examined a set of 2,139 randomly selected patients aged 35+, of whom 1,234 were women and 905 men. Age groups were selected according to WHO recommendations. The authors monitored the presence and incidence of preleukoplakia, homogene and macular leukoplakia, erythroplakia, nicotinic stomatitis, Olp and benign...

Periodontal disease as a risk factor of adverse pregnancy outcomes

Ivana Zajacová, Simona Kaprálová

Stomatológ 2023, 33(1):17-20 | DOI: 10.69658/sto.2023.004

Periodontal pathogens, which together with other factors influence the development of periodontal diseases, are currently attributed a significant share in the development of systemic diseases. These diseases include, for example: Diabetes mellitus, respiratory diseases, oral and colorectal cancer, Alzheimer's disease and, last but not least, adverse pregnancy outcomes. In this review article, the authors focus mainly on the effect of periodontal bacteria on pregnancy. The most common complications are: premature birth, low birth weight, pre-eclampsia and/or miscarriage

Odontogenic mediastinitis: a retrospective analysis of patients from the Clinic of Stomatology and Maxillofacial Surgery of the JLF UK and UNM

Descending necrotising mediastinitis is a relatively rare, rapidly progressing and often life-threatening form of mediastinitis with its origin in the region of head and neck. Early diagnosis and multidisciplinary approach are key to successful therapy. Even today, this type of infection can have fatal consequences. Over the past 10 years, 8 patients with descending mediastinitis were treated at the University Hospital in Martin,Clinic of Stomatology and Maxillofacial Surgery and, as a part of interdisciplinary approach, in cooperation with other clinics. Patients were of different ages, mostly men. The treatment was successful in 6 patients. Given...

Supraclavicular artery flap in orofacial reconstructions

Stomatológ 2023, 33(1):26-28 | DOI: 10.69658/sto.2023.006

The article presents the use of the supraclavicular flap and describes the results of reconstructions performed using this method. Supraclavicular flap represents a versatile reconstructive option that offers desirable aesthetic and functional results. It has a short operating time, high reliability and low post-operative monitoring requirements compared to microvascular reconstructions. Although microvascular flaps offer a wider range of reconstructive surgeries, they can also present certain limitations. Regional flap plastic surgery should still be considered in oncology patients with a high risk of recurrence or multiple comorbidities that do not...

Stomatológ 2023, 33(1):30-32 | DOI: 10.69658/sto.2023.007

The study was to evaluate the biocompatibility of metal alloys used in dentistry, as subjected to different corrosion attacks according to ISO 10271:2011 and ISO 22674:2016. We prepared cultures from pulp fibroblasts isolated from fresh dental pulp of third molars. Samples of 4 metal alloys, 1 cm2 diameter each, were brought in contact with pulp fibroblasts and analysed in intervals of 24 hours for 7 days to examine the cytotoxic effects by qualitative methods. Alloys A and C did not show any alteration of the qualitative parameters. Alloys D and E showed a slight zone of inhibition from Day 2. By Day 7, alloys A and C had a slight zone of inhibition,...

Stomatológ 2023, 33(1):33-38 | DOI: 10.69658/sto.2023.008

Since March 2020, COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019) brought major changes in treatment of patients in all fields of medicine across Slovakia. Patients undergoing orthodontic treatment are checked by an orthodontist once in 4 - 6 weeks. A range of measures has eliminated stagnation of treatment due to cancelled check-ups, postponed start of treatment and other adverse effects of the pandemic on orthodontic practice. Whilst these measures changed the entire practice, they did enable us to treat patients. Many remain in use until today.
