Descending necrotising mediastinitis is a relatively rare, rapidly progressing and often life-threatening form of mediastinitis with its origin in the region of head and neck. Early diagnosis and multidisciplinary approach are key to successful therapy. Even today, this type of infection can have fatal consequences.

Over the past 10 years, 8 patients with descending mediastinitis were treated at the University Hospital in Martin,Clinic of Stomatology and Maxillofacial Surgery and, as a part of interdisciplinary approach, in cooperation with other clinics. Patients were of different ages, mostly men. The treatment was successful in 6 patients.

Given the risks of descending mediastinitis and complex treatment, it is important to detect the infection as early as possible, diagnose it properly and start suitable therapy. Ideally, early cure of dental focal infection should be applied to prevent such massive spread of infection.
