Prosthetic dentistry is overcoming the rapid development of the technological revolution. Current methods of prosthetic dentistry make it possible to very well rehabilitate function, aesthetics and significantly reduce pain. Patient's satisfaction and quality of life with regard to oral health are two values that have gained great importance in recent years. From a functional point of view, teeth, their suspension apparatus, maxilla, mandible, masticatory muscles and temporomandibular joint are not isolated anatomical structures, but are considered as one functional unit. Therefore, together with their nervous system, they are associated with the term "stomatognathic system". The dental system not only participates in the chewing process, but also has other important functions, such as sound modulation, is part of the respiratory process and is a sensor for various senses (taste, temperature, pressure).
Bite splinting therapy is routinely used to diagnose and treat various disorders of the chewing system. Bite splinting treatment is non-invasive, reversible and provides the correct treatment for these disorders. Interdisciplinary cooperation is important to determine the treatment plan for the use of the bite splint in temporomandibular disorders. Choosing a specific splint design suitable for a TMJ disorder will facilitate a better understanding of its physiological and therapeutic effects and allow you to know the basic types of splints and explain how to and when to use them effectively. In this article, the authors provide a summary of information about the possibilities of using the bite splint as a preventive aspect in the prosthetic reconstruction of dental arches.
