New International Classification of Orofacial Pain in Relation to Temporomandibular Joint Disorders

The aim of this work is to provide an overview of the classification criteria for pain conditions associated with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems. Previous classifications created by the International Headache Society (IHS) such as the classification of neuralgic pain - ICHD 3 (The International Classification of Headache Disorders, 3rd edition) discussed headaches in terms of primary, secondary and painful cranial neuropathies. The same society (IHS) has significantly developed pain conditions in the new international classification of orofacial pain (The international classification of orofacial pain – ICOP), divided into seven chapters, three of which exclusively discuss orofacial pain in connection with dentoalveolar disorders, i.e. areas in the mouth and anatomically nearby structures, as well as myofascial pain and pain of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) itself.
