Central incisor ankylosis - A review article

Ankylosis is a known complication of replanted and severely intruded permanent teeth. Teeth that have suffered a trauma can fuse to the surrounding bone in a process called dental ankylosis. Bone around ankylosed permanent incisors does not grow, while the patient's face continues to grow in preadolescents and adolescents. The incisors remain in the place where they were at the time of the formation of the ankylosis. The growth of the surrounding skeleton continues, leading to functional and aesthetic problems. Dental ankylosis is also associated with root resorption that may eventually lead to loss of the affected tooth. It can be diagnosed by a characteristic sound phenomenon when tapping on a tooth. The ankylosed incisor shows lack of physiological mobility and in the X-rays, there are typically observable manifestations of replacement resorption. Various interventions in the management of ankylosed anterior permanent teeth have been described, but it is not clear which of them are the most effective ones.
