In the paper we deal with the presence of white areas on the mucous membranes of the oral cavity. White lesions are considered to be a symptom indicating or predicting the occurrence of a significantly more serious disease - carcinoma, rather than a disease itself. Systematic classification of white lesions in the oral cavity is based on available scientific literature and structured in such a way that it can also be effectively applied in clinical practice. This paper deals with the most frequent white lesions (of precancerous nature) of the oral mucosa.

Desquamative gingivitis is a common condition with clinical manifestations such as a reddish, painful, swollen and lacerated gingiva, which may be the sign of some pathological changes in mucocutaneous tissues, including lichen planus or vesiculobullous diseases. It is very important to distinguish this condition from plaque-induced gingivitis, which is a very common problem solved in dental offices and can exacerbate the histopathological picture of the primary disease, leading to misdiagnosis and incorrect therapy. The text comprises knowledge of desquamative gingivitis, its symptoms, possible aetiological factors, diagnosis and therapy.

The authors provide an analysis of clinical images of hereditary gingival enlargement of the gingiva into dimensions of gingival fibromatosis in states conditions that are parts of syndromes and symmetric fibromas. The article focuses on the clinical images of gingival fibromatosis of inflammatory origin that occurs in young adults and adulthood. Attention is paid to the need of differential diagnosis and genetic investigations with the possibility of clarifying the incidence of gingival enlargement as part of various syndromes.

Oral cancer is the sixth most common type of cancer worldwide. Early detection of malignant lesions is a high priority for reducing the number of deaths due to oral cavity cancer. The occurrence of white patches in the oral cavity is often a symptom of suspected or already indicated carcinoma. This paper describes characteristics of selected precancerous hereditary and non-hereditary white patches of the oral cavity.

Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a serious complication that affects patients treated with antiresorptive, antiangiogenic and cytostatic therapy. In order to avoid this complication, it is necessary to take a careful and targeted medical history before each tooth extraction. The authors of this paper offer instructions how to identify the patients at risk of MRONJ and recommendations how to proceed in prevention of medication-related osteonecrosis in patients at risk.

Osteomyelitis of the jaw and mandible is a clinical entity that has been known from literature for a long time. The heterogeneity of classification systems results from the fact that some modalities are used for description and definition of osteomyelitis in the orofacial region. These modalities include aetiology and pathogenesis, clinical picture and the course, radiological and histopathological findings. In addition, most of classifications are a mixture of these criteria, causing confusion that may lead to difficulties in comparative studies.

Impacting or dislocation of a fractured tooth root or of its part into the maxillary sinus is a rare complication during tooth extraction in the premolar and molar regions of the maxilla. Clinical studies report that these complications occur in 0.02-0.1% of all tooth extractions in the upper jaw. Most often occurs dislocation of one root, very rare dislocation of several roots and their parts into the maxillary sinus occur during extraction of the first molars, followed by the second and third molars and premolars. Rarely this situation can occur during extraction of upper canines in patients with large and irregular sinus maxillaris. This complication...

Simona Dianišková, Ivana Moňoková
Stomatológ 2019, 29(1):40-44 | DOI: 10.69658/sto.2019.009
Ankylosis is a known complication of replanted and severely intruded permanent teeth. Teeth that have suffered a trauma can fuse to the surrounding bone in a process called dental ankylosis. Bone around ankylosed permanent incisors does not grow, while the patient's face continues to grow in preadolescents and adolescents. The incisors remain in the place where they were at the time of the formation of the ankylosis. The growth of the surrounding skeleton continues, leading to functional and aesthetic problems. Dental ankylosis is also associated with root resorption that may eventually lead to loss of the affected tooth. It can be diagnosed by a characteristic...

Stomatológ 2019, 29(1):45-49 | DOI: 10.69658/sto.2019.010
Motivation and collaboration play a key role in any orthodontic treatment including Invisalign therapy. The ability of the oral and maxillofacial surgeon to predict the patient's level of collaboration is also very important because the patients who are not expected to collaborate properly should be treated with fixed rather than removable apparatuses, eventually the orthodontic treatment should be considered carefully. Pain and discomfort are common side effects of orthodontic treatment. Pain has a negative effect on patient's collaboration, his oral hygiene and a missed a missed dental appointment. The article deals with the comparison of subjective...

The authors of this review article discuss the nature and character of painful sensations in the varicella zoster virus infections. After recovery, the virus remains in a latent form in the nerve tissues. Under the influence of risk factors, it gets activated and herpes zoster can start. The authors describe clinical picture of the disease in the orofacial region. They describe its classical form, herpes zoster oticus, intraoral manifestations and metastatic herpes zoster. The authors analyzed the types of pains that had occurred during the development of effloresce stages in the affected dermatome. They described the presence and characteristics of...

Introduction: The aim of the study was to provide information about the Hybenx Oral Tissue Decontaminant, its' practical use removing biofilm and effects in clinical praxis. Methods: The survey sample consists of 20 patients treated with Hybenx during dental hygiene. Three patients were photographed for the result after using Hybenx. Questionnaires were handed to treated patients and dentists using HOTD. Results: Measured values using the two or six sited plaque index after staining with the detector and after treatment with Hybenx. After application of the detective agent, the average plaque index value was 2.725, after the application of Hybenx,...
