The authors of this review article discuss the nature and character of painful sensations in the varicella zoster virus infections. After recovery, the virus remains in a latent form in the nerve tissues. Under the influence of risk factors, it gets activated and herpes zoster can start. The authors describe clinical picture of the disease in the orofacial region. They describe its classical form, herpes zoster oticus, intraoral manifestations and metastatic herpes zoster. The authors analyzed the types of pains that had occurred during the development of effloresce stages in the affected dermatome. They described the presence and characteristics of pain in post-herpetic neuralgia.
