Is the apicoectomy still topical today?

The authors state apicoectomy should not be excluded from the dentoalveolar surgery repertoire. Its indication is, however, very dependent on perfect endodontic treatment of the tooth root. As the endodontic techniques of root therapy improve, the indications for root resection diminish. Especially, the resection of single-root teeth should be a thing of the past, or very rarely performed. The main indications for root tip resection include: periapical periodontitis of the tooth with root superstructure, fracture of the apical part of the root, entrapment of a dental instrument in the apical part of the root, and a cyst in the periapical area. An alternative for apicoectomy can sometimes be tooth extraction with subsequent tooth implantation.
