Recurrent ulcerations of oral mucous membranes may be limiting for patients by their frequent recurrence, but also by the pain and other subjective complaints that accompany these diseases. Hamed Mortazavi, Yaser Safi, and Maryam Baharvand have developed a scheme that helps to differentiate individual states and facilitate diagnosis of recurrent chronic ulcerations. In this article, some ulcerative conditions in the oral cavity are briefly defined. Stomatitis aphtosa recidivans and stomatitis herpetica recidivans occur relatively often. In addition, erythema multiforme, the aetiology of which is multiform and similarly manifested by repeated ulcerations, is less common. Autoimmune diseases with ulcerative manifestations in the oral cavity form a special group of difficult diagnostics. The aim of this article is to help define individual diseases and their manifestations and to facilitate diagnosis, especially differential diagnosis.
