Acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (ANUG) is a painful infection of the gingiva. Its primary symptoms are acute pain, bleeding of gingiva and significant halitosis (foetor ex ore). The diagnosis is based on clinical findings and complete treatment is achieved in combination of local debridement of the necrotic lesion and mouth rinsing. This condition is improved by oral hygiene and supportive therapy through vitamins, analgesics and targeted antibiotic treatment. Nowadays ANUG occurs most frequently in smokers and patients with weakened immunity exposed to excessive stress. Other risk factors are nutritional deprivation, state of immunodeficiency, immunosuppressive therapy and sleep deprivation. In some cases, oral candidiasis can appear.
