Introduction: The aim of the study was to determine the effect of deep mechanical tongue cleaning with a TS1 Tongue Scraper.

Methods: The examined cohort consisted of 288 patients, 180 women and 108 men, who were tested to detect the pathological microbial flora of the tongue. Pathological changes were observed in 76 men and 108 women. Then, patients with a positive finding were recommended to use a TS1 scraper. During second sitting, the surface of patient's tongue was cleaned with the TS1, and another swab was taken without contamination. Ten days later, the third swab was taken to detect possible changes of the microbial flora.

Results: 36 patients with pathological changes on the tongue surface agreed with the tongue cleaning therapy. At the end of therapy, in 31 patients (81.57%) no pathologically altered bacterial flora was observed. In 30 patients (83.33%), the presence of the yeasts was not detected.

Conclusion: Based on repeatedly performed tongue swabs in patients, we evaluate the mechanical device as sufficiently effective in removing the tongue coating and also in preventing the diseases caused by pathological microbial colonization of the tongue.
