Prosthetic rehabilitation of edentulous patients with extensive alveolar ridge atrophy is considered to be one of the most challenging prosthodontics treatments. With increasing age of the population and increasing number of elderly patients, there are high demands on quality and functionality of dental prosthodontics. Along with standard dental implants options, also alternative and cost effective treatments are required. These include the treatment of atrophied jaws with removable dentures anchored by means of dental mini-implants. The technique of inserting mini-implants as well as the procedure for subsequent production of an overdenture have been described and verified for a long time. Scientific literature and dental praxis bring various recommendations concerning the optimal number of dental mini-implants for anchoring dental prostheses. The paper presents a possible solution of optimal number of dental mini-implants for retention of totally removable dentures. There are presented case reports and data of patients treated with dental mini-implants within a period of 5 years. The authors agree that treatment with 2 mini-implants will significantly and sufficiently improve the anchoring of the dental prosthesis and ensure comfort for the patient, but in terms of long-term functionality and prevention of complications, they prefer treatment with 4 mini-implants for good retention of the removable dentures.
