The authors describe the basic clinical characteristics of gastric and duodenal ulcer disease. They state that these diseases occur quite often in medical practice. Patients come to dental surgeries with requirements that usually do not concern these disease conditions. It is now known that about two thirds of the diseases are caused by Helicobacter pylori infection. In the oral cavity, we can observe minor aphthous stomatitis and glossitis areata migrans with slight formation of erosions. However, these lesions do not occur in every ulcer disease and therefore do not have a reliable diagnostic value. Analogous observations can also be applied to duodenal ulcer.
Patients with ulcer diseases come to dental surgeries with drug-induced side effects that are part of eradications, such as reactions to antibiotics, histamine blocker inhibitors, and proton pump inhibitors. There are also a dense white and yellowish coating on the body of the tongue, angular cheilitis, and oral candidiasis.
