In this paper, the authors deal with the importance of oral focal infection in patients with cardiovascular disease, as well as the analysis of its morbidity.
Methods: The study sample consisted of 137 patients. In 2018, they were referred for an oral examination with suspicion of an oral focal infection by The East Slovak Institute for Heart Diseases (ESIHD) in Košice. The cohort was subsequently investigated for presence of oral focal infection in toothless individuals and individuals with at least one tooth.
Results: Of the total number of patients, the presence of oral focal infection was confirmed in 49.6%, 50.4% of the examined were without focal infection in the oral cavity. The presence of focal infection of dentogenic origin was not confirmed in any of the toothless patients.
Conclusion: The presence of focal infection of dentogenic origin was only in toothed patients. The most common sources of focal infection were chronic apical periodontitis and chronic periodontitis.
