Adjuvant systemic antibiotic therapy for a patient with chronic periodontitis

Adam Michelčík, Tomáš Siebert

Stomatológ 2021, 31(1):4-10 | DOI: 10.69658/sto.2021.002

Periodontitis is the most common disease of upper teeth. An early and correct diagnosis of the disease leads to a high successfulness of the treatment. In this paper we present a case study of a 47-year-old female patient. The attention was paid to medical history records, correct diagnosis based on a new classification of periodontal diseases dated from 2018, development of treatment plan and evidence based periodontal therapy. The patient was examined clinically (extra-orally and intraorally), and radiologically. The microbiological examination was performed in collaboration with the Department of Immunology and Microbiology of Jessenius Faculty...

Bisphosphonates are antiresorptive drugs affecting mainly osteoclasts and thus maintaining the bone density and strength. The one of the most important property of bisphosphonates is their very high affinity to bone tissue and subsequent deposition in bone tissue, thus ensuring a high concentration in bone tissues. The osteonecrosis of the maxilla is a newly described phenomena in connection with bisphosphonate therapy. The first case describing osteonecrosis of the maxilla was published in 2003. Since then, sufficient and increased attention has been paid to this problem.

Focal infection of dentogenous aetiology - incidence in patients hospitalized with cardiovascular disease (clinical study)

Margaréta Tamášová, Milan Kotráň, Petra Bejdová

Stomatológ 2021, 31(1):14-17 | DOI: 10.69658/sto.2021.004

In this paper, the authors deal with the importance of oral focal infection in patients with cardiovascular disease, as well as the analysis of its morbidity. Methods: The study sample consisted of 137 patients. In 2018, they were referred for an oral examination with suspicion of an oral focal infection by The East Slovak Institute for Heart Diseases (ESIHD) in Košice. The cohort was subsequently investigated for presence of oral focal infection in toothless individuals and individuals with at least one tooth. Results: Of the total number of patients, the presence of oral focal infection was confirmed in 49.6%, 50.4% of the examined were without focal...

Stomatológ 2021, 31(1):18-24 | DOI: 10.69658/sto.2021.005

The importance of bioactive materials in contemporary dentistry is undeniable. In our paper, we focused on the clinical assessment of cavities treated with bioactive material Biodentine ™. The bioactive material was used in diagnosing the deep caries and caries close to pulp. In the years 2012 to 2018, 102 cavities were treated. The therapeutic efficacy reached 90%. No endodontic treatment was necessary; the carious dentine of the tooth was completely substituted with bioactive material. In 10% of the cases the root canal treatment was indicated in order to preserve the vitality of the tooth. In one case a vertical fracture occurred, the tooth...

Complications during root canal irrigation

Kornélia Pápayová, Andrej Jenča, Andrej Jenča ml., Adriána Petrášová

Stomatológ 2021, 31(1):25-30 | DOI: 10.69658/sto.2021.006

Due to the complexity of the root canal system, mechanical preparation itself is not sufficient. Therefore, rinsing the root canal system with irrigating solutions is an inseparable phase of endodontic treatment. Although irrigating solutions are generally considered safe, complications may occur during their use or as a result of their effect. The most common incident is damage to the patient's clothing, eyes, skin and contact allergic reactions are also common. Apical extrusion of the irrigating solution and air emphysema are also relatively common complications. The authors give a brief overview of currently used irrigating solutions, describe possible...

Specific biomechanical and clinical issues of removable partial dentures: literature review

Halyna Pruts, Jurij Alexandrovič Močalov, Peter Stanko

Stomatológ 2021, 31(1):31-36 | DOI: 10.69658/sto.2021.007

Review of possible modifications of partial denture connection elements and specific risks of their clinical use remains relevant issues of modern dentistry that argument the need for further detailed research. The available database of scientific papers allows not only to provide retrospective review of prior research and trials with formulation of appropriate conclusions regarding specific planning of orthopedic treatment with the use of partial dentures, but also helps to develop specific recommendations for the evaluation and prediction the parameters of clinical efficacy of such prosthetic structures.

Surgery First approach from the viewpoint of an oral and maxillofacial surgeon

Simona Dianišková, Alica Orenčáková

Stomatológ 2021, 31(1):37-44 | DOI: 10.69658/sto.2021.008

Orthodontic-surgical treatment of skeletal defects is one of the most complex, but also the most interesting parts of orthodontics. The Surgery First (SF) approach is a relatively new procedure, which differs in its nature from the standard combined orthodontic-surgical therapy. At the beginning of the treatment, the patient undergoes orthognathic surgery to balance skeletal proportions. During operation, the original malocclusion is replaced by a new malocclusion, which can later be modified orthodontically. The absence of a decompensation phase, an immediate change in the facial profile and a significantly shorter time of treatment are the main advantages...

The effect of the angulated needle technique of anaesthesia into the inferior alveolar nerve

Vladimíra Schwartzová, Michaela Michalik, Milan Béreš, Zuzana Schwartzová

Stomatológ 2021, 31(1):45-48 | DOI: 10.69658/sto.2021.009

The aim of this short review article is to verify the effect of an angulated needle technique into the inferior alveolar nerve while administering anaesthesia in a group of patients. The authors compare different techniques of administering anodal anaesthesia and their impact to the inferior alveolar nerve, and evaluate the quality of anaesthesia and the degree of pain at particular techniques. They present the angulated needle technique as a simple and effective option for unexperienced dentists.

Introduction: This paper presents basic possibilities of surgical treatment of cystic lesions (cysts) in the maxillofacial region starting with decompression, marsupialisation, up to enucleation. Methods: The authors summarize the results of individual therapeutic approaches used at the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery of F. D. Roosevelt University Hospital in Banská Bystrica. The paper presents a group of patients aged eighteen plus, who were hospitalized and surgically treated at our department with a diagnosis of cystic lesion in the upper jaw during one calendar year. Results: The group of 32 patients consisted of 17 women and 15 men treated...
