Oral cancer is the sixth most common type of cancer worldwide. Early detection of malignant lesions is a high priority for reducing the number of deaths due to oral cavity cancer. The occurrence of white patches in the oral cavity is often a symptom of suspected or already indicated carcinoma. This paper describes characteristics of selected precancerous hereditary and non-hereditary white patches of the oral cavity.

Keywords: oral mucosa, oral carcinoma, precancerous white mucosal patches, hereditary white lesions, non-hereditary white lesions
