Classification of osteomyelitis - Past and present time

Osteomyelitis of the jaw and mandible is a clinical entity that has been known from literature for a long time. The heterogeneity of classification systems results from the fact that some modalities are used for description and definition of osteomyelitis in the orofacial region. These modalities include aetiology and pathogenesis, clinical picture and the course, radiological and histopathological findings. In addition, most of classifications are a mixture of these criteria, causing confusion that may lead to difficulties in comparative studies.
