Stomatológ 2021, 31(2):3-7 | DOI: 10.69658/sto.2021.014

Reinfection of periodontal tissues is always a serious problem for the patient. In the paper, we describe the state of health of the reduced periodontium in a stable patient with a history of periodontitis. This condition can be very fragile and transient in some individuals, especially if the patient would not receive ongoing health care in the form of supportive periodontal therapy. Therefore, we try to prevent and limit reinfection of the periodontium during scheduled recalls by individually appointed visits. An absolute collaboration on the patient's side is essential for these procedures. The aim of this scientific article is to describe the importance...

Tomáš Siebert, Dagmar Statelová, Mária Janíčková, Barbora Stenchláková

Stomatológ 2021, 31(2):15-20 | DOI: 10.69658/sto.2021.016

Periodontal health is defined as a condition of periodontal tissues without the presence of an inflammatory disease of the dental ligaments. The person does not suffer any consequences (mental or physical ones) resulting from the previous diseases. Tissues located in the vicinity of the implants, known as peri-implant tissues, have a specific and in many aspects similar anatomy. An elaborated protocol of preventive measures to ensure periodontal health is extremely important. There is convincing evidence that motivational interviewing often leads to more favourable clinical responses to treatment than conventional preventive tools. This scientific...

Stomatológ 2021, 31(2):21-23 | DOI: 10.69658/sto.2021.017

The authors present a new classification of gingivitis as part of a new classification of periodontal diseases. The new classification was worked out in 2017. In conclusion, the authors introduce basic literature review for understanding the classification of gingivitis and all available literary sources on the classification of periodontal diseases.

Treatment of generalized aggressive periodontitis in a patient with multiple systemic risk factors

Barbora Stenchláková, Tomáš Siebert

Stomatológ 2021, 31(2):24-29 | DOI: 10.69658/sto.2021.018

This study aims to point out the importance of diagnosis and treatment of periodontitis according to the latest methods in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), obesity, and diabetes mellitus. After a thorough history, clinical examination of the periodontal tissue, and X-ray examination, a diagnosis of aggressive periodontitis was established. An individual treatment plan was developed for the patient according to current scientific knowledge in evidence-based medicine. Immediately after subgingival treatment, the patient was indicated for systemic antibiotic therapy consisting of amoxicillin in combination with metronidazole as the gold standard...

Stomatológ 2021, 31(2):31-35 | DOI: 10.69658/sto.2021.019

Xerostomia or oral dryness is developed when the amount of the whole saliva is primarily reduced or even absent. Xerostomia has significant devastating effects not only on the oral environment but also on an individual's general wellbeing. It poses substantial challenges regarding diagnosis and treatment for both patients and clinicians. In recent years, several therapeutic strategies have been proposed to reduce patients' symptoms; however, xerostomia remains an unresolved complaint in human dental practice, especially among elderly subjects. BioXtra is a synthetic product that contains all essential salivary components to relieve the symptoms of...

Silvia Timková, Jana Kluknavská, Eugen Ďurovič, Jozef Minčík

Stomatológ 2021, 31(2):36-42 | DOI: 10.69658/sto.2021.020

In the study, the authors present brief characteristics on RAS (Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis). Initially, they report that three clinical forms are currently recognized: 1. minor aphthous stomatitis, 2. major aphthous stomatitis that replaces recurrent necrotizing mucous periodontitis, 3. herpetiform ulcers, which are not etiologically related to type 1 or type 2 herpes viruses. Their classification is supported by data in the table below. Then, the authors report on the factors that may come into causation with RAS. In an overview, they provide characteristics and report on epidemiology, causality, local factors, and relationships to a group of herpes...

Eating Disorders

Jana Kluknavská, Silvia Timková, Eugen Ďurovič

Stomatológ 2021, 31(2):43-45 | DOI: 10.69658/sto.2021.021

In this review article, the authors describe the characteristics, incidence and clinical picture of medical conditions that are classified as eating disorders. They make the public familiar with bulimia, anorexia nervosa and gastroesophageal reflux diseases. The authors state that bulimia is treated by psychiatrists and the dentists come across with the unilaterally torn corners of the mouth caused by deliberate urge to vomit. Xerostomia and symptoms of malnutrition occur. Similarly, anorexia nervosa is the domain of psychiatrists and neurologists. However, it is classified as eating disorder. In the oral cavity, side effects of taken medicaments,...

Pulpotomy using Portland cement in Mature Permanent Teeth with Irreversible Pulpitis

Sami Albatal, Chaza Kouchaji, Marwan Al-Akkad, Radek Mounajjed

Stomatológ 2021, 31(2):46-51 | DOI: 10.69658/sto.2021.022

This report describes performing a pulpotomy procedure for a child using Portland cement in a permanent molar with closed apices and irreversible pulpitis. A 9-year-old male patient complained of pain in right posterior tooth region for 4-5 days. After complete clinical and radiographic examination, the involved tooth was diagnosed with irreversible pulpitis. The treatment plan was to perform complete coronal pulpotomy followed by placement of Portland cement in the pulp chamber then to rebuild by composite resin restoration. Consequently, the coronal pulpal tissue was extirpated using a sharp spoon excavator. The pulp chamber was irrigated with sterile...

Potential causes and treatment of mouth opening difficulty in temporomandibular joint disorders

Juraj Zajko

Stomatológ 2021, 31(2):52-58 | DOI: 10.69658/sto.2021.023

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a relatively stressed and loaded joint, the function of which is applied during eating (food intake) and communication (speaking). The normal function of TMJ is monitored through intentional opening-closing process of the mouth, and via assessing the maximum range of opening the mouth. This condition is relatively individual and ranges from 3.0 to 4.8 cm. The value is taken as a normal movement of the mouth. If the value is above this limit, we speak of hypermobility and below this limit of hypomobility or difficulty in opening the mouth. The highest value that was measured was 7.2 cm. Causes of mouth opening difficulty...
